Science Island (Mokslo Sala) is Lithuania’s first Science and Innovation Promotion Centre, located on Nemunas Island in Kaunas. It houses over 140 interactive installations, a state-of-the-art planetarium, four laboratories and a wide range of cultural and educational programmes.
Praktika, directed by Rokas Sutkaitis and Julius Seniūnas, developed the full visual identity, custom typeface, wayfinding, signage and web design. At the core of the system is the dot, chosen as the fundamental graphic element. The dot appears across every natural scale: distant stars and galaxies, the circular silhouettes of planets, the organic structures of cells and the smallest atomic particles. Its universality extends into human-made systems as well: Morse code, Braille, digital screens and mechanical interfaces.
This concept shaped the creation of the custom Mokslo Sala Dot typeface, built entirely on a dot-grid structure. Its defining feature is a controllable weight range, from the lightest forms that merge with the grid to heavier versions where dots touch and connect organically. The typeface functions in parallel with the Science Island symbol, both operating purely through dots and grid logic.
All identity elements – the typeface, logo, colours and iconography, form a unified graphic system designed to communicate current scientific ideas as well as future themes. The dot-based visuals adapt easily to illustration and photography, creating a flexible and scalable identity. Over time, visitors themselves will become part of the system, as their portraits integrate with the dynamic dot graphics, reinforcing the centre’s mission to make science participatory, curious and alive.
