The creative process for Aino’s new site started over a year ago, experimenting with pure HTML text and what you can do with it. Turns out you can do a lot. ASCII, flying characters, transitions, hover effects and even games! We love the idea of combining plain text, images and interactivity to visualise our work and show how machines and humans can create art, dreams and commerce together.
To make the whole thing work, we had to start from scratch – vanilla JS, HTML and CSS. We created a system of character points that can morph, bounce, paint and write in real time using plain text. We also designed a micro-framework called White – essentially a SPA-like architecture on Vite with only 2kb of runtime JS, including persistent states and JSX templates, but without the heavy hydration and virtual DOM.
Building websites is a real craft. Anyone who builds something knows you can get cheap copies anywhere. The question is what kind of quality you want to put your name on.
