Liverpool-based creative studio Smiling Wolf has developed a new visual identity for Liverpool Philharmonic, bringing together the institution’s rich musical heritage, iconic architecture and contemporary cultural ambitions.

At the heart of the identity is Afterglow, a visual concept inspired by the sweeping curves and recessed light bays of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s Art Deco auditorium, designed by architect Herbert J. Rowse in 1939. These architectural details are reinterpreted as concentric gradients, radiating bands and fluid geometric forms that evoke the movement of soundwaves and the lasting emotional impact of live music.

The resulting design system balances the prestige of a historic cultural institution with a more accessible, contemporary personality. Modular graphic elements, named Arc, Glow, Wave and Beam, create a flexible visual language that adapts across digital platforms, social media, print and motion.

Developed to connect the orchestra, concert hall and wider community, the identity celebrates Liverpool’s cultural legacy while creating a more dynamic and inclusive platform for the future.
